And now for a chat with  Jackie, a student at Northwestern Kellogg. Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad?   Jackie: I’m originally from the Bay Area and moved out to beautiful, snowy Illinois for undergrad at Northwestern University. I did a lot of theater in high school but wanted to get serious in undergrad, so I started out as a pre-med / psych major. It wasn’t long before I was auditioning for student films and trying to get my fix of creativity, and I ended up transferring to the Radio / TV / Film department my sophomore year. I decided I wanted to become a producer, started producing student projects, and moved straight out to LA after graduation to chase that dream. I started out as an assistant as a reality TV production company and worked my way up from there, becoming a freelance Associate Producer, then a Story Producer. I’ve worked on shows for ABC, FOX, NBC, and other networks. Accepted: Can you share three fun facts about yourself? Jackie: 1. In my spare time, I’m a letterpress artist and create original posters and stationery using antique printing presses and lead and wooden type. 2. My internships before senior year of college involved being Eddie Murphy’s handler at a premiere party and cataloging paintings by Michael Alig, a familiar name if you’ve seen the movie Party Monster. 3. On the first day on my first show as an Associate Producer, I had to appear on camera and pretend to be married to our host (and pregnant!) so we could go undercover at an Outback Steakhouse to find out how they make their Bloomin’ Onion. It was as ridiculous as it sounds! Accepted: Where are you in b-school? What year?   Jackie: I’m a first-year at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, in the two-year full-time program. (Go ‘Cats!) Accepted: Which other programs had you applied to? Why did you choose Kellogg? Is the program living up to your expectations?   Jackie: I applied to Stanford GSB, Northwestern Kellogg, UCLA Anderson, NYU Stern, and UT McCombs. I think it’s important to spend your time only applying to schools where you would be genuinely happy, since it’s such a time-intensive process; I realized that my priority was to stay close to friends and/or family outside of the b-school bubble. I looked at programs that were near friends and family (Bay Area, New York, LA, Chicago) and that were known for their ultra-collaborative cultures. Once I had some target schools in that area, I narrowed the list down by looking at which programs were strongest for my interests (entertainment / media, marketing, and data analytics). When it came down to decision time, I was torn between Anderson and Kellogg. I’d been living in LA for seven years, and the thought of leaving my friends and community there was really hard for me. (Not to mention that my family lived just a few hours’ drive away.) Anderson is also an amazing school if you’re interested in going into media / entertainment – its proximity to the major networks and studios creates unique opportunities to intern during the school year to build your network. If I knew 100% that I was going to go back into entertainment, it would have been really hard to say no to Anderson. But! I had a feeling that if I went to Anderson, I would be as sucked into media and entertainment as I was in undergrad. I never gave myself a chance to explore other industries or jobs, and I wanted b-school to be an experience that broadened my perspective. So I wasn’t (and am not) 100% all in for entertainment. That’s when I started to lean towards Kellogg. Kellogg also has a great reputation as a marketing school and has a really strong data analytics program, which speaks directly to my interests (and is applicable across multiple industries). I came to Kellogg’s admit weekend before I had made up my mind, and that sealed the deal for me. Getting a chance to meet current students, take mini-classes with professors, and learn about the school and its administration (I’m a HUGE fan of our Dean, Sally Blount) made me fall in love with Kellogg. I believed deeply in this institution and wanted this to be where I came to learn. So far, Kellogg is definitely meeting my expectations in terms of class experience, its emphasis on collaboration, and how student-driven the school is. My professors are wonderful and engaging, and I often have a goofy smile on my face during class because I’m just so happy to be learning here. (It’s sappy, I know. But true!) The collaboration piece comes in through group assignments and the second-years’ attitude of giving back to us by mentoring us and making themselves available for even the silliest of questions. I’d also heard that Kellogg is very student-driven, and I’ve been really pleasantly surprised to find out how true that is. Students have a huge voice, and it’s exciting to know that as a student, you can leave a mark on the school. The parts of starting school that I find challenging (which aren’t Kellogg-specific) are juggling priorities and adjusting socially. I’d always heard that it was hard to manage your time and priorities at school, but I never thought it would be THIS hard. There’s always some awesome social event, or another club to get involved in, or†¦oh, I don’t know, homework to do? It’s been tough so far to get my footing in this hyper-overbooked environment. I also didn’t anticipate just how much I would miss the people from my pre-MBA life. Granted, we’re only a couple of weeks into the school year, but I for some of us, it takes a little time to feel completely at home in a new place with new people. I’m one of those people, and if you’re just starting your MBA and feel the same way, know that you’re not alone! The good news here is that everyone’s in the same boat, and I’ve found Kellogg students to be re ally wonderful, welcoming, and excited to learn about my background and pre-MBA career. Accepted: On your blog you call yourself a non-traditional student how so? Can you walk us through your journey of heading back to school after your career as a producer? Do your future plans involve media production?   Jackie: I think of myself as a non-traditional MBA student because I did not have a business background in undergrad or in my career pre-Kellogg. I never thought that I would need to go back to school, but I realized a couple of years ago that I wanted to have more of an impact than I was having as a freelance producer. I thought about what job functions I would like, and I started to zero in on marketing. At the same time, I became fascinated with the rise of big data in entertainment and decided that I wanted to focus on that industry trend. Being at school as a non-traditional candidate is interesting. I’m still learning what unique qualities I bring to the classroom – so far, I think that I come with a unique set of collaborative skills and tools from working in a creative environment, and I approach problems with a big case of beginner’s mind, which can be helpful in looking at problems from new perspectives. Like many people at school, my career plans got a little less cemented once I got to b-school and started to realize how much there is out there. At the moment, my future plans could very well involve going back into entertainment, but in a marketing or strategy function instead of a creative function like I had before. I am also potentially interested in trying out different functions (like consulting or brand management) that would give me exposure to how things are done outside of the entertainment industry. Accepted: You did great on the GMAT the first time (690), and then even better the second time (750) can you share some tips with our readers?   Jackie: Oh, the GMAT. I don’t know that I have much wisdom to share about the test, but here goes! First things first, if you are stronger in verbal than in quant, know that verbal is weighted more heavily. For non-traditional candidates, the standard advice is that you need to get a quant percentile somewhere in the 70s to demonstrate that you can do the work, and I think it’s important to get as close to that threshold as possible. But don’t completely neglect verbal – if you have the ability to get a high score there, it will do you a disproportionate amount of good. (For reference, my 750 was a 98% verbal and a 74% math.) The next thing that I would say is to remember that the test is a measure of your abilities in one instance. It’s just one test, and it’s not reflective of your intelligence or how much you deserve to get into b-school. I actually had a little anxiety attack during my first GMAT experience, and I think a big part of the issue is that I really felt deep down that the GMAT was a measure of my worth. But it’s not! It’s just a measure of how good you are at taking the GMAT. A lot of the work I did between the tests was sharpening my quant, but I also spent a lot of time building up my confidence and getting my head game in check. My last piece of advice would be to be inquisitive and search for the best explanation for the concepts you may be struggling with. Probability was my mortal enemy on the GMAT – I just could not understand how to make sense of them, especially in two minutes! At Kellogg I’ve had to take an intro to statistics class that dealt with†¦you guessed it: probability! But I actually managed to figure it out this time, since our professor used a couple of different ways to explain it that finally clicked. I wish that I had taken the time to check out more resources in GMAT prep, like Khan Academy or different math sites. I think that’s pretty intuitive and natural for most people, but it wasn’t for me, and it’s something I would improve on if I were to go back in time and do this again! Accepted: Looking back at the application process, what would you say was your greatest challenge? How would you advise other applicants who may be experiencing similar challenges? Jackie: I think that my greatest challenge in my application was nailing my story. As an unusual candidate, I think it was extra important for me to clearly articulate why I wanted an MBA and how it tied into my career goals after school. I also needed to tie together my career background with my future goals and to create a narrative that I believed in so much that I got excited every time I talked about it. If you’re finding it hard to build your story, I would suggest that you do some introspection to find out what you really want out of school, what skills you bring to the table from your pre-MBA career, and what skills the MBA will give you to help you achieve your goals. I would also recommend doing an audit of your work experience and extracurriculars / activities to identify some personal characteristics to highlight in your application. For example, the themes I identified were mentorship, teamwork / collaboration, execution, and passion. I made sure that those personal qualities were highlighted in the different parts of my applications. It might seem weird to go through and formalize your qualities like this, but if you spend some time thinking about these common themes, the stories and application materials you develop will start to naturally converge around them. Making sure that those LGBT students feel safe at school is going to work. Anderson Cooper on CNN 360 interviewed the vice-president of Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance who posted such saying on his facebook page. In the wake of such bizarre deaths and the sudden disappearance of teenage girls, Tania Rashid, an American woman who travels to Bangladesh to carry out an investigation. Such cases as gang rape have become the order of the day in Bangladesh. This female journalist takes to the screens, and she, together with the Vice go for one anothers throats in a session that attracts thousands of viewers. However, there is something particular about the interview. When Tania shoots a question to the Vice broadcaster of the rising cases and how the role of the media has not been of much help to help unearth such cases, the broadcaster loses all that would be described as impartiality. The effects of such bias can hugely be felt and treated as a twofold agendum. According to Tania, and which to some extent fulfils the argument of the public opinion, the media has given this issue and a couple of others, a wide berth. The general bleakness of the people, the accepted coldness of the store itself, and the theme of class consciousness throughout the entire story causes you to really see how this story parallels society and many peoples, especially young peoples, views in North America during this turbulent time of policy, rules, conservatism, and some of the actions taken against them. The store and the people paint a picture of an oppressively conservative and narrow-minded America based on policy before people, and rules of the corporation. Within the state, Shelby county covers the most area, (755 square miles), and is also the most populated county, with approximately 927,644 people residing there (Infoplease. com). Shelby county includes the city of Memphis. Memphis is the most populated city within Tennessee with at least 645,000 residents (Infoplease. com). I have atta ched several maps in order to see different parts of the land. Map I shows where the county lines are located within Tennessee. You can also see where Memphis is located within the county. Map II shows the elevation levels of the state.As you can see in that map, Memphis is located within the lowest elevation levels of the state. Map III shows the rivers that run throughout the state. The main river that runs between the Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri borders is the Mississippi River. There are several natural disasters that I would consider to be threats to the Memphis area. One natural disaster that I would consider to be a concern to Memphis would be an earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey, (USGS), there is an approximately six percent chance that there will be a major earthquake within 50 kilometers ofMemphis in the next 50 years (Homefacts. com). The last earthquakes that had magnitudes of five were in 1976 and 1991 (Homefacts. com). The earthquake re corded in 1976 was approximately 40 miles away from Memphis. Looking at the sources found, I see that Tennessee has had its fair share of earthquakes, so I would say that another earthquake occurring in the area should be a concern of the citizens and government officials. â€Å"There is a broad agreement in the scientific community that a continuing concern exists for a major destructive earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone. Many structures in Memphis, Tenn. and other communities in the central Mississippi River Valley region are vulnerable and at risk for severe ground shaking. † (USGS. gov). The New Madrid Earthquake of 1812 was one of the most significant events in U. S. history. Topographic changes were noted over an area of 75,000 to 130,000 square kilometers, with the total area shaken being at least five million square kilometers (USGS. gov). Back then, the damage was minimal because of sparse population. Nowadays, an earthquake that severe could result in  "great loss of life and property damage in the billions of dollars† (Cusec. rg). The fact that Memphis is the most populated city in the state, a small earthquake could cause a significant amount of damage. â€Å"By learning about the potential earthquake hazards in your area and by taking certain preparedness measures now, you can increase your chances of surviving an earthquake and minimize its dangerous and damaging impacts† (Cusec. org). There are many organizations that Memphis has in order to help citizens learn how to prepare for these catastrophic events, and what to do in order to survive.One organization is the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (R. A. C. E. S. ), which is a volunteer communications group that assists the Shelby county area. R. A. C. E. S. provides emergency personnel that can help with communications during local, regional, or national emergency/disaster events (Cityofmemphis. org). Another organization that provides help during emergency situations is the Memphis/Shelby County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). The EMA helps local, state, and federal agencies with response to disasters that requires a multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional response.The EMA has satellite links with the National Weather Service that activates sirens in order to warn the residents of multiple cities, including Memphis (Cityofmemphis. org). There are also things that the citizens and homeowners could do in order to minimize the damage during earthquake. Earthquake drills are a great way to help enforce the importance of preparedness, and to prevent panic and injury during an earthquake. Families should have emergency plans that lay out where everyone is going to be and where to reunite with one another. Keep a flashlight and a batterypowered radio in the home.Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves, and fasten the shelves to walls. And lastly, have a seven to ten day supply of food and water (Cusec. org). You can never be too prepared for any natural disaster, so being safe is better than being sorry. Not all natural disasters are threats to Memphis. Volcanoes are an example of a natural disaster that is not a threat to the Memphis area. There are no known volcanoes in the area that would cause any kind of harm to the residents of Memphis. Historically, there have not been any known volcanoes in the area either.Memphis is not located on any fault boundaries, so I would think that there would no volcanoes forming in the area any time in the near future. Hurricanes are a little more of a concern for Memphis. The western area of the state has the possibility of being affected by the end of certain storms. Hurricane Katrina is an example of this situation in which Memphis can be affected by storms not necessarily in the direct area. When Hurricane Katrina hit the U. S. in 2005, multiple counties in Tennessee were evacuated; Shelby County was one of those counties (Fema. gov).I would consider Memphis to be slightly co ncern about hurricanes occurring in the area, especially since the city is located at a low elevation. The lower elevation would be more susceptible to flooding. The government should have adequate warning of the hurricane, since it would most likely be coming from the Gulf of Mexico. I would also expect that the citizens would be prepared for hurricanes, since they are used to flooding situations. Tornadoes, I feel, are more of a concern than hurricanes. There are many more tornadoes in the middle of the state then there are on the outskirts.Tornadoes are more likely to strike open plains rather than in an urban area, like Memphis. â€Å"The reality is, very few tornadoes ever touch down in the city of Memphis†¦.. Nevertheless, tornadoes can and have struck within the city† (About. com). There have been numerous tornadoes that have affected Shelby county, but not nearly as many as the middle of the state. The last one that affected Shelby County, and had a high death co unt was in 1987, with at least 120 deaths (NWS Memphis Forecast Area Tornado Database). There have since been tornadoes that have caused deaths, hich is not surprising considering the amount of people that live in the city. With all the tornadoes that have gone through the county, there has always been a significant amount of damage. That also is understandable since there are a lot of buildings in the city. There have also been plenty of tornado warnings for the state, but not all of them affecting Shelby County. The last tornado warning that included Shelby County was on May 9, 2011. In order to be prepared for a tornado, there are several things we could do. First of all, avoid windows and seek shelter in the center-most room on the lowest floor possible.Use your hands and arms to protect yourself from falling debris. Also, keep some sort of identification on you at all times in case you are hurt or disoriented (About. com). Keeping identification on you is a good idea for every natural disaster. It will help emergency personnel identify who you are and hopefully get you back with your family. Tsunamis are another type of natural disaster that is not a concern for Memphis. There have been no known tsunamis recorded for Memphis. I do not think that there will be any future tsunamis in Memphis because there is no ocean or large body of water located near Memphis.The Mississippi River is near Memphis, but the river does not create waves that would be large enough to create a seismic wave. Even though tsunamis are not a threat to the city, flooding is a huge concern for the city. The Mississippi River is right near the city, so that would be a reason as to why the area floods frequently. The city is also at a low elevation, which is another reason as to why the area floods frequently. There is currently an active flood warning in effective right now (Fema. gov). Last year, there was flood that occurred in the beginning of May.The Mississippi River was supposed to rise to a record level of 48 feet, with 48. 7 being the record crest in 1937. More than 1,300 homes were ordered to evacuate and nearly 400 people were living in shelters. According to an article on abcnews. com, the most extensive damage occurred in Memphis, where â€Å"entire neighborhoods have been swallowed by the water and vehicles completely submerged† (Tanglao, â€Å"Memphis Flooding†). Since this obviously happens frequently, the citizens and government have ideas of what the levees can hold, and what the river’s maximum water level is.To prepare for flooding situations, there are certain things the government should tell their residents in order to make sure they are safe. They must send out warnings letting people know when and if the water level is high enough to go over the lands limits. In Memphis, the government should be able to accurately know when and if the Mississippi River has reached its maximum, and if people should evacuate their homes. As a resident, you should also be aware of what is going on in your community and know about the town’s emergency plans.You should also have sump pumps with back-up power in order to prevent contamination of the flooded water. Turn off all utilities at the main power switch in order to prevent electrocution. Fill bathtubs, sinks, and soda bottles with clean water, so you have water to drink that is not contaminated. You should also have water bottles and a food supply that will last a couple of days (Bt. cdc. gov). On the opposite end of the spectrum, wildfires are another example of a non-threat to Memphis. There are no forests in Memphis because it is a highly urban area with lots of people and buildings.The last wildfire reported in Memphis was in 1952, when there was a serious drought (Tnema. org). Even though there was that wildfire many years ago, I do not think that there is a serious threat to Memphis for another wildfire. Lastly, I also think that there is not a thr eat for extreme winter conditions to occur in Memphis. The last warning for some sort of winter conditions for Shelby County was in February 1992 (Fema. gov). Even though that was not too long ago, I still feel like there is not a huge concern for extreme winter conditions to occur any time soon again.Since Memphis is further south, they do not really get harsh winters like we do here in Pennsylvania. Memphis Tennessee has its fair share of natural disasters. They have to be concerned about earthquakes, floods, and tornadoes the most, while extreme winter conditions, volcanoes, and tsunamis the least concerned about. Every place on the Earth has to be concerned with natural disasters. Humans make the disasters a lot worse than they actually are, but there is nobody else to blame but ourselves. The Importance of Jacks Character in Goldings Novel Lord Of The Flies Goldings novel Lord of the Flies follows the story of a group of boys stranded on an isolated desert island. There is no figure of authority on the island and as their delicate sense of order fades, their behaviour stats to take on a more savage significance. At the beginning of the novel, Jack is the most obvious leader. The reader is introduced to Jack near the end of the first chapter, as he leads the choir to the meeting. Jack is described as the boy who controlled them before Golding even tells the reader his name. The word controlled hints that Jack is a dictator, as is shown later in the novel. The first†¦show more content†¦He thinks he should be the Chief and dislikes Ralph from the beginning because he feels that Ralph took the power that should rightfully be his. Ralph and Jack are very similar, and can be contrasted because they are both natural leaders. In a way, Ralph and Jack are the same person, but both have different priorities, and different leadership styles. Ralph is democratic and selfless, associated with order and control and tries to be fair. Jack, however, is a dictator, with a selfish leadership style, his priorities being only himself and hunting. Jack demands respect, whereas Ralph earns it. The point of this is to show that although two people may have the same qualities, the choices made by the people make a difference; it shows how the same person can turn out just because one chooses savagery and one chooses order and democracy. Ralph and Jack show the two kinds of mankind - good and evil. Jack is the only boy whose last name we learn. This is because the choir call him Merridew which shows that even at this point in the novel, Jack has authority and power. The fact that the choir use his last name is quite militaristic, but also is a way of Jack denying his identity and trying to make himself more powerful than he is.
